Blitz Halloween Contest - What You Should Know Before Entering

Post  Nighthawk0973 on Wed Oct 26, 2011 2:53 pm

I'm super exited for the first Halloween contest. So I decided to give everybody some tips on creating games with Blitz, and basically just teaching different genres.

Chances are you'll need to know how to do:

-Images

-Fullscreen Games

-Custom Cursors for Fullscreen Games

-KeyInput

-Variables

-Math

-Types

-Sound

-Music

-Collision Detection

If you don't know this stuff use the APIs or throw me a PM, I learned from the APIs btw.

The next thing you need is Logic. After you learn the basic fundamentals you need to figure out loopholes, shortcuts, tricks, and other things that can help you make your games come together. So now test if you're good enough to make a game for this contest by making a simple arcade shooter like space invaders.

Get an image for the title menu, high scores (use Text and TextReader to display, remember API docs are in the program itself) and than get a ship/enemy ship, some bullets, score display, and lives. If you want add some powerups like double attack and invincibility. Than players click the start button, they use left/right to move & space to shoot. If the bullet they shooter touches the enemy, than the enemy explodes and you get 10 points. (score = score + 10) If you get hit than you loose a life (lives = lives - 1) if lives is less than or equal to 0 than player dies, game over appears.

RPGs are tougher so if it's your first game don't try this. If you do want to than your on your own, I'm trying my first RPG myself.

Fighting games are not recommended either as the amount of sprites you need is a mess.

Mario style games will be difficult as well, but if you add good collision detection you can pull it off with some effort.

Or you could create something more original. Like a puzzle game on the PC. (well, it's all on the PC)

I don't know how the contest will be but if it's free genre than you're off to a good start. If it's NOT free genre but a specific genre than let's hope you get it good. I'll help with concepts like collision detection, I won't debug your contest games, I won't help you get a certain feature developed.

I just wanted to make this for people, so I'd have fairish competition, I've only been programming Blitz for about a half year but am still pretty good. ;D

Good luck and may the best game win!

The thread for the contest hasn't been created yet, but I soon will be. In fact, I am going to create a new sub-forum JUST FOR THIS CONTEST! This way, each user can submit in a new thread, and we can avoid those annoying, long posts!

good idea. Just make a 'forum contests' section, than people post inside the 'Submissions' section of that and the 'Contests' section of it is where the actual contest threads go (stick the current contests) than add all the old contest submissions in locked threads called contest archives in the contest archives sub forum or something....

Very Happy

Thread moved from "Blitz Help" to "2011 First Annual Halloween Contest."

Thread type changed from "Normal" to "Sticky."
